Hi all, Well, I just found out today that I have been accepted to graduate school in the University of Georgia's Internet Technology program! :) One of the requirements for the program is that every student must have a laptop. Now, I *do* have a laptop - a Powerbook 145B, which I somehow doubt would work out. ;) They want Macs to be at least a G3. So I'm trying to decide whether to buy a new iBook (base configuration, which I can get for $1099 through the Apple Education store) or a used Powerbook G3. I would want at least 128MB of RAM... hard drive doesn't have to be all that big, just decent-sized... and built-in ethernet.
A search on Ebay turned up a 250MHz Wallstreet with 128MB and 20GB HD that sold for $500... a 400MHz Lombard w/ 192MB and 6GB HDD sold for $715. I did see some Lombards that were selling for over $1000 (these usually had more RAM, bigger HD, and/or extra SW included). I wouldn't want to spend that much on a used machine since I can get a new 500MHz iBook for $1099. I have never used a PB G3 at any great length and would be interested to hear reports/opinions from owners. And opinions from all, of course! As far as speed goes, I certainly don't need the "latest and greatest"... 300MHz with sufficient RAM would be fine. A related, somewhat tangential question: I am very happy with my desktop G4 @ 350MHz... what speed G3 would you say a 350MHz G4 is comparable to? I guess a lot depends, money-wise, on whether or not I decide to sell my desktop G4 when I get the laptop... in a way I don't want to, since I'm partial to desktops... if I use a laptop for too long the screen gives me a headache, and I've always found it difficult to type on those small keyboards! -Of course, if I buy a new iBook, I can apply for Apple's Educational Loan program. Back in December of '99, I got a 1st-generation iBook (300MHz) as a Christmas present but ended up selling it about 6 months later... now I kind of wish I had kept it! :P TIA for all opinions!
