one other trick, on earlier macs you have to switch on the ethernet at
about the same time, the machine looks for a "heartbeat" (a regular
pulse) that signifies that there is a valid network, if it can't find
one it gives up and won't let you switch appletalk.  there is an
extension to make it switch any way, called "single talk", i've got it
if anyone wants it (freeware).
