Some of you may recall awhile back that I was having problems installing OS
X on my Beige G3 which I recently upgraded with a G4 450 ZIF. I tried going
back to the 266 ZIF and attempting to install but got the same problem.
The "problem" is that when I try to restart from the OS X install CD, I get
an Open Firmware screen with a message that says something like "No HFS
Volumes Found". It repeats this message about 10 times and then boots from
my other drive. At this point I should point out my IDE configuration:
IDE 1 Master: Original Quantum 6 Gb hard drive (currently empty)
IDE 1 Slave: Original Panasonic 24x CDROM (OS X Install)
IDE 2 Master: 40 GB Western Digital drive (OS 9 & other volumes)
IDE 2 Slave: Original Zip drive (n/a)
So after the OF message, it boots with the OS 9 volume on the drive on IDE
2. Curiously, NEITHER of the drives (CD or HD) on IDE 1 is mounted or
accessible until I reboot with OS 9 as the startup disk. Weird, huh?
I discussed the problem with a collegue and he pointed out that I should
make sure the jumpers are set correctly for the drives on IDE 1. In
particular, he suggested that the HD might have a different jumper settings
for "Master by itself" and "Master with Slave". I got on Maxtor's web site
(they bought Quantum evidently) and found the docs for the HD and it
mentions that there IS a "Master with Slave" jumper setting that should be
used for certain IDE devices.
So after this long explanation, my question for you is: Does the Panasonic
drive require the HD jumpers use the "Master with Slave" settings?
Thanks for any help,
-Mick
