It seems that this topic comes every couple of months or so! In any case, I have a hacked Apple CD/DVD driver (I just followed instructions on the web on how to do this) and it seems to work with most CDROMS (don't know about FW though). Email me off-list for the file if you want. If I remember correctly, in OS 9.1 prior to iTunes supporting my external Yamaha, this driver worked fine with iTunes.
