Your G3/266DT may be getting sufficiently long in the tooth to 
warrant a new PRAM battery- it will start doing strange things when 
it starts to go, and will become progressively more random.  You 
could replace that anyway, and then even if that's not the problem 
now, it won't be a problem in six months when you're really under the 
cosh to get some work done...

Clean installs are really good.  They make many flaky things work 
properly.  I just did one, when I realised that 9.1 is the best bet 
for my Beige G3DT (was 266 now 500) & ditched 9.2.2 'cos I'm never 
going to use OS X on this machine and it was making things not work. 
Mike's advice...  use the opportunity of a clean install to analyse 
what your key apps are, how you are using the mac, and take a pencil 
and a piece of paper and actually physically write down all your 
settings...
