Greetings, All
New listee here, recently come into possession of a Power PC 8500
(free) suffering woefully from a lack of memory. Previous owner had
only 48megs to handle a shipload of apps and wondered why the unit
wasn't operating properly.
Anyway, my problem is this:
I purchased two memory sticks, 128megs each, (OWC, $55 to the door)
which with the already installed 32megs plus the 16 built-in, would
increase my memory to 304megs.
While the manual that came with the processor shows where the memory
goes, it doesn't show how to get there. My other computer, a UMax
C500 was a simple matter of opening the case and inserting the memory
sticks. After removing the exterior shell of the 8500, I can see
thru the interior of the unit to the opposite side where the memory
banks reside, but all I can see is the lower portion of the back of
the processor board--the memory bank area is hidden from sight. Not
being a tech, of course, I don't want to do any damage to the
processor by forcing something that shouldn't be forced. So what I
need to know is, how do I access the memory banks to install the
memory ? The only possibility I can see is to remove two screws
that secure the cover of the audio in-out plugins at the back of the
unit. Or is there something inside the box that needs to be removed
to gain access.
Any assistance would be appreciated, either on or off list.
BTW, when I opened the case, I found between a quarter and a half
inch of dust and lint covering the interior. It's a wonder the
sucker even started up.
I'm really looking forward to getting this computer up and running as
memory-wise and processor speed-wise, it's much bigger and faster
than my venerable C500.
