Hi listerz,

Well I finally did it :-) Installed OS X on my B&W with a Voodoo 5 card
installed!
I decided to try it again after six months after reading that OS X
worked with a Voodoo 5 installed and set as a second monitor.

Here's how I did it:

The V5 was in the 66 Mhz slot and the ATI Rage 128 in a 33 Mhz slot. I
let them sit there, only switched the monitor cables so that the 17"
monitor became the secondary monitor connected to the V5 and the 21" the
primary on the ATI. Also set these prefs in the Monitors cp. (As a
precaution I had already pulled the retail SCSI card BTW, pressed CUDA).

I tried to boot from the OS X 10.1.2 CD: CD tries to use Voodoo 5 as the
primary monitor: broken system folder icon. Zapped PRAM, booted into OS
9.2.2 again, set the Monitor prefs again, still the same no go when
booting from CD.

OK switched video cards, so the V5 now in a 33 Mhz slot, ATI in 66 Mhz,
trying to boot from the CD,
PRAM battery is now really empty, won't even boot anymore after pressing
the CUDA.....
A day later I put in a new PRAM battery, ATI is used now as the primary
monitor, but spinning cursor freezes.
Pulled the V5 card and only use the ATI for now: OK, OS X CD boots and
installs 10.1.2 perfectly.

After booting into OS X, Software Update immediately tells me it needs a
Security Update 7-12-02. I never used it in OS 9, but I vaguely recalled
that I needed a Security Update before I could update the OS, so I let
it install. But after installing it doesn't show any other updates
including the 10.1.5 update. So I manually d/l the 10.1.5 combo update,
and decied to install that the next day.

The next day I read the email from Al Poulin saying that there's a
problem with the Security Update 7-12-02. It would install even if you
don't have the latest OS installed. That's what happened to me, but Al
also provided a link to Apple's discussion forums where one person told
us a way to temporarily remove the softwareupdate file with the Terminal
app. I did that, but still couldn't install the 10.1.5 combo update
(this parition doesn't meet the requirements). After several tries I
thought of adding a password to my login name, because I let the
password blank, and when I tried it again with the Terminal app it now
did work. After installing the 10.1.5 update, I moved the softwareupdate
file back. Then I opened Software Update and it said there were two new
updates: IE 5.1.4 and iPhoto 1.1.1 (IIRC), after a restart I opened
Software Update again and I updated the Airport s/w, finally after
another restart Software Update asked me to install the Network Update.
So it's now up to date, I only manually d/l the IE 5.2.1 update. I still
have to d/l the latest iTunes 2.0.4.
I also installed the latest TinkerTool and WindowShadeX.
I added the retail Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card and OS X still works, it
even mounts my Jaz disks w/o any extra s/w.

FYI: Apple has updated the files in the Software Update list, so if you
installed the Security Update 7-12-02 before another update it will now
show and install them again.
FYI2: the earlier Security Update (from 2001) plus the Installer Update
is only necessary for you to install if you have OS X 10.1.0 installed,
for any higher version you don't need to install it.

I then installed the Voodoo 5 again in a 33 Mhz slot, but which slot or
combo of cards I tried, even different firmware versions for the Voodoo
5, OS X would crash with a kernal panic at boot....
BUT I found a Voodoo 4/5 firmware flasher so I flashed the V5 with a V4
firmware and now OS X succesfully boots!!! Finally :-) Now I can switch
between OS X and 9 w/o yanking PCI cards :-)

Another thing I want to mention is that I used Apple Software Restore
2.1.2 in OS 9.2.2 to copy the complete OS X partition (which is on a 40
gig Maxtor HD which is the master) to my slaved Quantum 6 gig HD which
went very smooth. I did this to back up OS X. I then set this slaved HD
as the boot disk, and lo and behold, it even booted into OS X, and that
in a Rev.1 B&W!!! So yes, OS X fixes the master/slave problems :-)

So I am a happy Mac user right now. I can boot into OS X to learn it and
I'm going to get OS X versions of the apps I most use, and for a LAN
party I can boot into OS 9.

OK thanks for reading this far and I hope I have helped someone with a
similar problem. If someone needs the Voodoo 4/5 flasher let me know.

Only two and a half hours before Jobs starts his keynote, what will he
bring to us this time :-)?
