"next time the computer breaks, tell your dad to give it to you [ 4th grade
girl ] to play with.[ fix it ] tell him he's an IDI..tell your parents to
go and get an Imac"
[ best I could recall ]

I had a similar situation, trying to get amateur astrophotographers to
understand HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL physics & math, & how their Photoshop hacks [
Gaussian Blur, destroys image resolution ..this is understandable to a 4th
grade girl, see above ] were violating the laws of physics. I got
flamed-off the list, with death threats & profanity! (it happened to
another PhD, who's friend told me "i couldn't believe he got ganged by a
bunch of amateurs"). I used the following quote:

"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build
bigger and better idiot-proof programs [ Photoshop ], and the Universe
trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is
winning."
-- Rich Cook

"..it shows how FOOLISH the inexperienced amateur can be.."
[ stupidity is its own reward ]
-- Carl Sagan

"..Embarassment of Riches"
"..like throwing Pearls at Swine"
[ quote from the Bible ]
"..you can't teach a pig [ dummy can't turn on a computer ] to sing..it
just annoys the pig & you [ Internet Help line ] get frustrated"
"..never get into an argument with an idiot"

Essentially, I tried to teach pigs to sing (I argued with idiots), & pigs
got annoyed (idiots became more idiotic).

This was the message in that guys speech. In the end, the solution was an
Imac. The I in Imac stands for idiot-proof. An idiot-proof solution
(hardware & software) becomes a very powerful means to an end.

with"
