Since people are discussing alternatives...

About 5 years ago I went with iname.com, a web/redirection account, "free
for life", until that went to shit about two years ago, when mail.com
absorbed them, then started charging about $40/year when they got it back
up. So then I leapt on Yahoo, which was free for webmail and also free POP
access. I thought they were a safe bet, as they were actually showing a
profit then. Then a few months ago they introduced charges, $20/yr to begin
with. I coughed up, but now am planning my own domain and hosting, which
seems as cheap as any account offered, and will last as long as I want.

But in the meantime, a very good service is being offered by Novell:
myrealbox.com, which is used as a testbed for their software. Free web,
POP, IMAP mail, 10MB storage (IIRC), also scheduling functions which I've
never used. No ads, no webspace. It's not guaranteed to last, but has been
around a few years, and is very fast.

For the occasional webpage, I use a free redirector, such as cjb.net, and
redirect a subdomain to my free ISP webspace (eg
http://yournamehere.cjb.net/). Not suitable for professional use (it sends
a popup ad -- unless you've blocked them), but okay for a local
environmental activist site.
