the electronic ones are better.  you can power the machines on and off
anytime you want, you don't need to before you switch.  the whole point
of a kvm switch is to avoid multiple monitors and keyboards, these first
became popular with server farms where the extra space for keyboards and
monitors is a hassle and you don't need to stare mindlessly at multiple
monitors when the systems are all working, just when you do maintenance.
