I am in the process of upgrading to a G3 266 tower from a 9500 that I just finished maxing out (G3 450, 656 meg ram, Voodoo 3 3000 video card, 2940U2B Scsi card) and I have a few questions about the G3 that I cannot find the easy answer for by googling.
1) I have seen various mentions of the Rom/ MB revision determaining whether or not I can use ATA slave drives. My motherboard says 820-0864-B and the rom says 820-0954-A. I assume that this is a rev A Rom. I have access to a couple of desktop 266s, are the roms interchangeable? Which rom will allow slaves? 2) I have some SCSI drives that I would like to add for more storage. IIRC, you can place more that 1 additional drive in these systems. Where do they go? It looks like there is room on the bottom of the plastic handle to put them, but I don't know if this is sturdy enough. Is the onboard SCSI controller SCSI II/fast? 3) The Video chip says 3D Rage II + DVD. Can I just put in an IDE DVD rom and play DVDs? I have the full AV card and 6 meg vram in the system. 4) IIRC, I read that using an onboard modem is faster than an external because of the limits of the Mac serial ports (112k bps I believe). Is this true? Would I be able to get these on the swaplist or do I need to by one retail? Thanks for the info Len -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
