Lots of criteria have been mentioned, ripping mp3s, gaming, Photoshop, but these are all individual interests that in most cases probably do not coincide. And one BIG advantage of X is true multitasking, and that can account for a real speed gain under real-life circumstances. Things are possible that were not before, things that come closer to the PC world in terms of speed, even with a snail's pace chip, things like toasting, running the terminal, checking the mail, and actually working all at the same time. Try that under classic OS - no way, regardless of how much faster a particular program may seem.And no crashs, no three finger restarts etc, etc, those are real speed gains where it counts, getting the job done. another thing: Pipeline architecture says at least as much about processor speed in real-life as bus frequency, and here the PPC chip has it hands down on the antiquated x86.
