As far as I can remember from 9.2.2, the only thing you need to do to hook up two machine via ethernet is:
1. connect them via a crossover cable 2. Start Filesharing on the machines 3. enable AppleTalk to appropriate network (ethernet) 4. Go to the menu that says " connect to server..." which in OS X is in the drop down menu next to Help 5. check in the AppleTalk zone and you should see each other.
