Open System Prefferences>Network.
Under ACTIVE NETWORK PORTS, choose your ethernet slot.
If you are on a private network, next to Configure, select Manually.
Assign an IP address (ie 12.125.35.190). On the second box, do the same
except change the LAST number (12.125.35.191, 12.125.35.195, etc).
Click on the Appletalk tab and click Make Appletalk Active. (this is in
case you add an old world OS machine to your network)

Open the Sharing Prefpane and turn Fie Sharing ON. Be sure check Allow FTP
access.

On the OS 9 machines, you need to check the File sharing over TCP/IP box.

This should do it. On OS 9 machines, you should be able to type in the IP
address of the X machine in the Chooser. On the X box, you can hit
Command-K and the Connect to server dialog will appear. Select Appletalk
and your servers should appear.
