i agree it's not going to happen, and frankly it's a silly bit of speculation, i wish people would get off it. if apple were stupid enough to go for the pentium, they'd be just another pc and drown in a blood bath of cost vs. speed comparisons. as i understand it, altivec was a joint project between ibm and motorola, and i thought apple. in any case, i know ibm has rights to it, so i don't think licensing is causing problems, i think the chips just might not be out in quantity (and at a low enough price) yet and apple has some serious improvements to make to the logic board design first any way, which is a more likely bottleneck.
if, if apple went to intel chips, it wouldn't be the silly pentium, it would be some of the risc chips that frankly should have replaced the pentium in pc's along time ago. intel was going to stop the increasingly brain dead x86 line after the original pentiums, obviously they couldn't get microsoft and others to go along with the idea and were forced to continue the silliness in order to sell chips to a segment that won't take the necessary step to a new architecture.
