intel and the pc makers definitely twisted intel's arm pretty hard, officially intel was going to stop the x86 madness after the original pentium, sadly they've been forced to hack away at it some more and try desperately to make it faster while all the while it's getting more and more ugly in several ways. i'm sure many intel engineers have severely gnashed their teeth working on it, and i pity them for the dreams it must inspire (i know when i'm doing allot of hardware or software stuff i start to think in those terms, i start to think in code, once i woke up with a muscle spasm in my calf muscle, for several seconds i searched for the cable to yank out to stop it!).
