Rod, thanks for the suggestion.  I checked the jumpers to make sure they're
set correctly on each drive.  I've tried switching the drives between master
and slave, and also cable select, with no changes.  I disconnected the stock
IBM and set up the WD for single drive (master), zeroed all the data, and
was able to install 9.1, but the same set of errors popped up afterwards.
I'm not sure what to try.
