I had the SAME problem when I first slapped USB in this Beige G3 DT.
I added a Macally Optical TB to work.
I took the number from the card and did research. Turns out the card 
was NOT a Mac compatible card!
Just make sure when you get one, it says MAC compatible or don't buy it.
