Hi Paul,

>>
And I want more memory. How much is practical? Max it out or...?
>>

Yes, buy as much as you can afford, if you buy smaller DIM's you will only
be throwing them out later. Of course, you don;t have to buy it all at
once, buy say 128/256 (see below) module this month, see the improvement,
then in a couple of months, repeat etc...

On RAM, it would be worth checking your ROM version using System Profiler,
*officially* only rev 3 roms support 256MB modules, however many people have
gotten them to work in rev 1&2, check www.xlr8yourmac.com for a full
explanation before you buy, they tell you how which RAM modules work in rev
1&2. Also www.crucial.com have some advice on this.

>>
And what about processors? I don't know what ZIFs are but I see lots
of references on the list? Is this the way to go? And what is best?
>>

ZIF's are Zero Insertation Force processor modules. I personally would try
to get an official Apple one from eBay or a dead G4 etc, however there are
many companies that sell "souped-up" G4's for the beige G3. I'm not sure,
but off the top of my head I beleve the maximum the G3 can support is
533Mhz, and then there is the issue of getting AltiVec enabled...

>>
BTW is 9.2.x worth the upgrade from 9.1?
>>

Although 9.2 was made really to improve X compatibility, this weekend I went
from 9.04 > 9.1 > 9.2.1 > 9.2.2, and I can definately say there are
improvements. Apple's 9.2.2 KB document *claims* 9.2.2 improves performance
for G machines:

"delivers updated support for Macintosh systems that are based on the
PowerPC G3 or G4 processor.", so it may be worth a shot.

>>
My main intensive use for G3 is/will be digital music production,
MIDI and audio, so I want the biggest bang for the buck while poverty
precludes buying a topline Mac.
>>

Although I am fairly knowledgeable on Pro-audio Hi-Fi, I know next to
nothing (bows head in shame) about MIDI etc, however you may consider taking
a look here, despite your decision to not adopt X just right now:

Apparently 10.2 is something amazing for audio professionals, I'll let you
decide.

Hope that helps somewhat.
Matt
