I have a Beige G3 233 as well, 640 MB of Ram (bought back when 256MB was $18),
upgraded Hard drive to 40GB, and external Yamaha 4x2x6 CD-RW

My built in CD-rom drive is absolutely horrible too. Won't read most types of
media and spins up and down for five minutes before I even see the Disk Volume on
my desktop. Apple System Profiler says its a Matshita CR-587. I just bought an
internal replacement, TDK 48x16x48 CD-RW for $50 after rebates from
http://www.JandR.com I also bought a 100GB Maxtor Hard drive. They're in the
mail now so I'll let you know how they install.

I'm getting beautiful perfomance with my 233 at 640MB RAM.

Your Mac has a ZIF slot so yes that's the way to go.

I found lots of info at http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/g3.shtml They raise a good
argument about the cost effectiveness of sticking to a 400-500mhz G3 zif upgrade
especially if you plan to stay with OS 9 for a while. I'm using my G3 primarily
for music apps as well and many aren't showing signs of being supported under OS
X anytime soon.

> BTW is 9.2.x worth the upgrade from 9.1?

I've been using 9.2.2 for a while now. Works great but I skipped 9.1 so i
couldn't compare.

Same story here. Logic Audio is sometimes slow for me so I'm seriously
considering the 500+MHz G3 zif upgrade. A search at http://dealmac.com for "G3
zif" showed the latest price posted at $180.

BTW, I'm also adding a second internal hard drive as a slave drive on the CD-Rom
ATA chain. (If Apple System Profiler says you have the Rage"Pro" graphics card
it supports slaves on the 2 ATA chains)100GB for $100 ain't bad eh?

with the memory, upgrade, and internal cd-rw and hard drives I'll have a:

G3 517Mhz, 640MB RAM, 140GB Hard Drive space, and 48x/16x CD-RW all for only an
additional $350, and all internal.

(Ram might be more expensive now but it's also the thing that isn't as necessary
if you only need a few apps running at once. I can usually get away with less
than 300MB, even with Logic and ProTools)

(PS. if you indeed have the Beige Desktop model you'll need a sled to install any
extra hard drive in an open bay. (not that you will :o) I found a sled at
http://store.yahoo.com/buyproline/beigg3des.html for $2.95 plus $6 s/h)
