I ran into some file corruption halfway through trying to add a slave
drive but it fixed itself. Here's what happened:

My corrupted files on my original HD fixed themselves once I switched
the master/slave jumpers on the two hard drives. All I did was make my
old drive (the one with the corrupted data) into the slave instead of
the master. I put the new drive in the master position. I even used a
24 inch IDE cable I got from a PC friend (blue connector on Bus end,
High speed cable) and everything works perfectly. Files that I could
see but couldn't open on the 2nd Partition of my original HD are now
back to normal. System profiler recognizes the original HD's 2nd
partition now. I have no idea why it didn't before. This all happened
by:

-unplugging it, moving it, and plugging it in again with a different
cable (this is when most of the files on the 2nd Partition wouldn't
open, I could see the files but double clicking gave me "couldn't be
found" errors, System Profiler showed a 40GB drive but the second
partition was showing up as 0GB)

-then I added a new slave HD to the same cable (wouldn't recognize
either HD)

-then I removed it entirely from the chain and installed boot software
on the new HD (connected as Single Master)

-then I added it again as a slave to the new HD and it worked (both HD's
recognized and 2nd partition of original HD back to normal.) Weird!

-then I changed to the 24 inch cable to so I could place the HD's in the
Upper and Lower bays and close the box. :o)

I'm sending back a $100 5400RPM Maxtor 100GB (2MB cache) I bought
earlier, and I'm keeping a 7200RPM Western Digital 120GB (8MB cache!).
Paid $1 per gig for it at CompUSA w/ rebate, WooHoo! Also, I'm loving
my 40Write/12ReWrite/48Read TDK CDRW drive I paid $50 for at JandR.com
w/ rebate.

Here's what I have:

Mac G3 Desktop (Beige) 233/512k L2 cache, ATI RagePro (Video).

Internal IDE Devices:

40GB 7200RPM Maxtor Hard Drive with OS9.2.2, Main Boot disk (Bus 0,
Slave)

120GB / 7200RPM / 8MB Cache / Western Digital Hard Drive with OS9.2.2,
also set up to Boot from but with only Music applications, Pro Tools,
Logic Audio, Finale, etc.. (Bus 0, Master)

40x12x48 TDK CDRW Drive (Bus 1)

External Devices:

SCSI:
Yamaha 4x2x6 CDR burner
Microtek ScanMaker X6 scanner

Ethernet:
Alcatel DSL modem (Pacbell DSL, 150k per sec. Down / 24k per sec Up)

Parallel (Printer) through a Belkin Data Switch:
Epson Stylus Color 800 Printer
Opcode MIDI Translator II Interface connected to an 88 weighted
keyboard.
Palm Sync Interface Cradle

Parallel (Modem):
Global Villiage 56k Modem/Fax

Well, I think I'm finally happy with my 1998 Beige G3 Desktop. My recent
120GB HD and 40x CDRW upgrades cost me $185.

Left to do now is:
-add a G3 533 Zif upgrade (only about $180 last time I checked)
-and fill up my PCI slots with Firewire, Audio hardware, and maybe USB
cards. (another $150)

Thanks to all who helped me in my upgrading woes :o)
