barracuda drives have serious reliability problems, i believe many, many were repaired under warranty and eventually the design was changed, but who knows which version your vendor will ship? ide is the original spec, ata (with a number like 66 or 100 etc.) is the later spec and includes everything that's part of the ide spec. plus enhancements. model numbers would really help in any case. i find it hard to believe any of the barracuda drives are straight ide, i'd think they'd all be ata. i'd definitely get the model numbers and check the spec sheets for any drive, vendors do make mistakes far too often in their sales blurbs. even if you do get the barracuda, check the model numbers. other Seagate's are popular amongst some. generally, ibm, fujitsu, and maxtor are considered good (though i've had a warranty nightmare with maxtor, so they are permanently off my list, the test of a company is what happens when things go wrong, maxtor has failed that test with me and was extremely obnoxious about it!).
