I've looked at iPhoto and it didn't seem to fit my needs, exactly, especially
since I usually work in 9.2, not classic nor X.

There is a feature of Graphic Converter and other browser type photo organizers
(I use Camedia, which comes with Olympus cameras) that is quite wonderful,
though maybe not documented. I came upon it myself. Maybe it only works in
9.x, not 8.x as a feature of the operating system...I don't know.

You can drag an image out of the browser and drop it on the icon of Photoshop or
other manipulation programs (out of Camedia, onto Graphic Converter, for
example) work on it in the target program and save it. The upgraded image
appears in the Browser.

I almost never use an image without working it over in Photoshop but I need the
browser features to organize and run slide shows. This inter-program ability is
wonderfully fluid and quick. I don't know, it probably works in OSX with iPhoto
too. So you aren't limited by the tools in one program.

Hope this helps.
