You mean trace cutting, & using wire-wrap wire jumpers?  Is there a website 
which describes the procedure?  My origins are hardware, so I can do it 
without a lot of pain.  But, if it gets a bit involved, I think I would have 
to agree with you ... just spend the extra $$ to get something ready to go.

The Promise PDC20262 cards could be "diverted" from PC uses to Mac uses. The 
changes are external to the chip. To trace cuts nor discrete wire adds. Only 
component deletes and components adds.

The later Promise cards (PDC20267, etcetera) contained provisions to prevent 
this "diversion", and these provisions are internal to the chip.
