Hi everybody - I'm getting distortion through Sound Out on my beige G3 (Rev. 1). Have swapped speakers so am sure they're not the problem. I tested with TechTool Pro and it seems to generate tones OK - as far as I can hear but the test sure isn't music. Either way, I can't hear any distortion there. Also ran Speaker Test in Sound Control Panel (under 9.1). All tests "complete." I assume the audio card is involved in generating test tones so don't know what to make of these results.
The distortion shows up playing iTunes mp3's as well as the parent AIFF's played right from the caddy. Is the audio card involved in the ripping process - such that a bad card would result in a defective mp3? So how does one test these cards anyway? I assume the stock card is weak and am open to suggestions for upgrade (but damn, I'm such a tightwad!). Am I expecting too much out of this aging old beige relic? I also suspect the cheesy, static-prone Sound Out port itself - the mini-plugs never seems to snap in tight as in good audio equipment. Thanks very much.
