To my knowledge, Applecare covers against problems due to defects in
manufacture that occur during the length of the warranty. It covers all
parts in the system you purchase (laptop, desktop, monitor, etc.).

Homeowner's insurance (or renter's insurance) is as you say to cover against
accidents and theft. It can sometimes also cover against lightning damage
(assuming such damage can be visibly proven) or even water damage. But be
aware that most of these policies cover only the replacement value of the
equipment you originally purchased. It won't buy you a new computer, it will
pay enough for you to purchase an identical used model (based upon average
resale value). Just because you have it covered for the purchase price,
don't expect a full payout. For that reason, you should re-evaluate any
extra coverage you have just on the computer each year.
