The mouse is easily fixed using a credit card...buy the friend a new one, then figure out how to fix the one you've got.
OK, OK...I'll have some pity...no specifics, but some general advice about "fixing" things. First, don't mess with it until the initial panic is gone; Next, put all the parts together in a clean, well lit place; Then, admit it's hopeless, and start just studying the mouse, looking calmly to see how things might fit together, or not; Since it's already hopeless, just try a few things...and above all don't force/jam anything together...stuff may "click" into a position, but it probably won't take 50 pounds of force (like a PCI card may); Try to think of it as a puzzle, even as fun...I'm not joking about any of this...I've found that without panic, and with the admission that it's hopeless, the mind is freed to a great extent, and most things become repairable.
