Yes, the smiling Mac is gone. Have a beer in his memory. I suspect the reason why your not hearing the start up chime is your system volume is turned down while your alert volume is turned up. Go into the system preferences and adjust the sound there. Finally have another beer for the platium sounds. They also have been retired.
