Thanks for including this note in your comments. I too have a Rev.-A B&W
and having upgraded to a faster - 7200 rpm - and larger - 40 gb - IBM
drive, I too am plagued by extremely flaky performance. -> in 9.2 - many
freeze crashes, errors during the extensions dance on startup, etc. and in
10.? -> previously working install on external SCSI drive hangs late in
startup and the OS X Install disk crashes when it starts to write to the
HD. Although I was aware of problems trying to run two ATA drives from the
motherboard interface (which the place who sold me the new drive insisted
on setting my Mac up to do and which I have since discontinued doing - but
I still have problems) I thought the system could handle any single drive.

I had been speculating and in fact beginning to hope (because it would be
an uncomplicated thing to fix) that it was a bad ram chip or two (added at
the same time as the HD) but having tested them extensively yesterday with
Newer's Gauge Pro, they seem to be OK. Is that an adequate test, does
anyone know?

But on that note, is there a reference anyone knows that gives info about
how to determine what memory IS good enough to run 10.X on a G3. There is
frequent reference to problems with installing/running OS X related to
non-Apple memory which while it performs well enough to work in OS 9, can't
cut it in 10.

And ... given the frequent mentions of 10.x not installing/running because
of non-Apple equipment, does anyone know if there are ATA PCI cards that
ARE known to work OK with OS X ?

Thanks for taking the time to add the extra information that you did - it
probably saved me a lot of further grief.
