OK, leaving aside all the pros and cons of the G4 800 option for
older PCI macs vs the G4 550 for the G3s, why isn't there a similarly
fast upgrade for my ZIF based Mac? Is it a technical or a business
thing?

Are the faster than 550 mHz models based on a different G4 CPU?
Because my first thought was that there was some technical difference
which prevented the faster ones being built into a ZIF card, but
which could more easily be incorporated into a PCI-style CPU
converter card.
