It is NOT necessary, unless you have very little physical ram installed
in your computer. Some programs will run fine with VM on, maybe even
better, although I'm unsure of which ones do. Remember, all you're doing
is using your hard drive to substitute for lack of RAM. I do not know
about Mac laptops and VM, but I suspect that it isn't much different for
them vs. a desktop computer.
