I've noticed that installing an older version of OS in a harddrive with a newer version (or that used to have), is pretty bad, usually a lot of different files are scattered or kept and usually are not erased by the installer, same thing might happen the other way around, the best way to solve this is by going to the Extensions Manager and choosing the OS only extensions (in mine is OS 9.1 All) and going to the "extensions (disabled)" folder and erasing the incompatible files. WHen it comes to Quictime, AppleScript, and other applications you must do it manually or upgrade accordingly. I had a situation in which I had installed Quicktime 6 in a harddrive (with no OS so no system files were installed) I installed OS 9 in it which brings 4.1 then every time I started up the machine it kept telling me "Quicktime VR was not installed becuase an updated version of the software is required" why? dunno, but I solved the problem by downloading QT 6 (about time since it was driving me nuts!). >I was having problems with Explorer 4, and decided to use Netscape 4. My experience is that if I am having problems I definitely go up, not down, I have Explorer 5.1 works great. WHen it starts acting up, both IE and Netscape do that after a while, either wipe the cache files manually, don't do it from the program, or install the latest version for your System (or reinstall it, after erasing all the other files get fresh plugins, etc.). Acting up mostly happens when there are corrupted files in the cache or even volume problems (more than 90% of the times I had browser problems was because of a volume bitmap error, catalog b-tree error, file corruption, etc,) try rebuilding the desktop, running a program like Norton or Disk Warrior, etc. before taking drastic measures. > My guess is that Netscape has >acquired a new personality. I wish I knew what you mean here cause I don't have a clue. What do you mean install? I am running Netscape Communicator and I have not upgraded it for at least a whole year, I was just about to download an update since my OS changed (9.1 hooray!!!). Never seen Netscape install itself over and over again like you said (?) or install additional files, IE does that on the first run, but no more. I use Netscape extensively for my MacOL email account. BTW is it possible to run it from a burned CD, as long as you make an alias of the plugin folder (INSTEAD of the folder itself) that points to your harddrive OR download all the needed pluggins then burn them, remember, what's burned is burned forever (meaning whatever was left behind... well you get me). And always keep a copy of Netscape on your harddrive just in case. >This buying and installing applications every week to continually upgrade, >and to counter-attack the problem of Product A, version 10 vs. Product Z, >version 37, is a real pain. And from all of the emails I have seen in >the past 2 weeks, installing OS versions 9, X, and above isn't a good thing either. Get OS 9.1, as I mentioned in another message, it is the ONLY one of the very few Apple upgrades that really delivers what it promises: speed, stability & productivity. Sure it's not going to be faster than your OS 8.1 (to me the speed decrease is only about 5%) the memory management it's great, a great improvement if you ask me. I've also heard a lot of ordeal with OS X so don't go there yet. No one should upgrade their OS twice in less than two/three weeks, a lot of people do that and end up with a real mess. >I'm open to suggestion. In the meantime, I'm going to have a >cold beer. I tasted beer when I was like 12 and hated it so much I never wanted to ever taste it again, I'd have Pepsi instead ;) Although a lot of people say that beer is healthier, spinach is a lot healthier than a cookie, but I prefer to eat the cookie :-D LOL!
