I had a similar problem when I went to version 10.2 on my G4-350.
It turned out to the the monitor software. Apple has upgraded the 
monitor to what they call the New World monitor. (Not the Video, but
the program you boot into to configure your system, kinda like BIOS
on a PC).

Check that you are up to date on rom monitor, because it can really
drive you crazy to have frequent beam ups at random intervals. I 
did notice that it was typically during a very low-level system
function that the lock up happened. (Like moving the cursor, or 
clicking the mouse.)
