The "i" was originally for internet, however, soon after the iMac Apple threw out this naming scheme reason and started using "i" for anything in their consumer product line. "e" was reserved for education products such as the eMate and the eMac but since the eMac is now available as a subpart of the consumer line it might still be called an education Mac just one that is available to everyone.
