Yes it is. :-)
I got a 5300 used about 4 years ago, used it for a year, then I had
display problems, thought the LCD was shot, bought a 1400c/166 used,
decked it out completely, dock, G3 upgrade, max RAM, video out,
everything. But my Beige G3 desktop was still my main Mac. The
portables were just secondary systems. I experimented on the 5300c and
found that it was just a loose video cable, fixed that and it was back
up and working. Bought another 5300c from a surplus store, they sold it
to me for parts because it wouldn't boot. But it also happened to have
a loose power connector, meaning that it could be sent in to Apple for
the Extended Repair Program. Know what their fix for a 5300 is? Replace
everything but the RAM, drive, and display. So when I got it back
everything was new. I traded in the pair of 5300s for 1/3 back on my
Pismo from PowerMax. After that I will never deal with PowerMax again,
it was great on the way in, but horrible beyond that, they refused
warrantee work, wouldn't allow me to speak to a supervisor, denied I
had a problem, bunch of other stuff, never buy from them. Apple,
however, was willing to help me with them and the couple issues I had
with my Pismo were fixed in just a few days. The Pismo then replaced my
Beige G3 as my main Mac and my Beige G3 became a server.
That lasted until I got a G4 tower, but I can honestly say that I use
my Pismo 50-65% of the time still. The only computer you use is the one
you have with you, its true. Now I have a Duo 230 in my basement that a
friend gave me and a 190cs that I am trying to find a home for. The Duo
needs some work and it is my little hobby project [need to get a
battery for it and replace the keyboard] but the 190 is in perfect
shape.
Portables rock. Get a wireless hub and you will ask "why have a desktop
at all?"
