Well I had just typed you out a half hours worth of new experience with my newly acquired G4 DP500 then the power flickered ( guess I need a APS grrr.) So here's the short of it..(anything specific, email me off list.)
If you use A/V programs (photoshop, quark, finalcut, toast, protools) then the benefits from having a Dual will be very recognizable in the speed and ease the apps process their info. If the speed of the above type apps arent that critical to you and/or your main use will be internet based apps (surfers, mail, etc) then aside from mp3's you wont have much of a benefit with a Dual. (also assuming your G4/400 isnt a Yikes/PCI...since the DP/Gigabit is an AGP machine) I have talked with a couple Dual 1ghz owners and they tell me that in most A/V (audio/visual) apps their machine is about 2x faster than a Yikes/G4. Im only a casual end user of A/V apps so the dif between 2mins and 4mins isnt that big of a deal, though for someone more heavily into it < with larger files to process > then the dif between 2hrs and 1hr is quite a significant difference. So as with the AltiVec engine of the later day G4's it all depends if the application was written with it in mind, else there is little to no benefit. Jaguar takes both into account ( duals and AltiVec ) and I must only assume that updated versions of Jag will only further integrate apples trademark duals...as will future A/V apps. As far as most everything else it seems the same divide between apple apps and pc apps with companies...if it will benefit the company that makes it then it will come =) The mac platform is already a good consumer of high-end A/V apps so its already there, the only problem the benefits arent supported in very many apps outside of A/V. If you are getting a very good price on it and you want/need a G$ in general, I say grab it. If the duals dont do much for you then take this into consideration...a used Dual G4/450 chip and heatsink (DP500+sinc sold this week on ebay for 350) is worth about the same as a new single 800mhz chip w/heatsinc - street price (give or take $50). So if a G4/800 at the same price (give or take) is a good value, then there is another way to look at it. just my 3.5 cents =) I cant speak for Jag personally, Im a stubborn 9.2.2 user =) on 12/6/02 4:01 PM, Svar Finnbogason at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Hi all > I have been offered a dual G4 450 MHz. > I have no exeriance of thees machines, so I am not familiar with the pro's > and con's of the dual G4's.
