I have had two Yamaha 8424S and one 8824S drives. Sadly, the 8424S's died early deaths. Reason unknown. The 8824S has been flawless, but it has since been supplemented by a Matsushita 8X/4X/24X EIDE. The Yamaha is used for Retrospect backups; the Matsushita is used for everything else, and it has been flawless, too. The Matsushita is a LaCie-branded drive which was liquidated by "one of the usual suspects" (MacResQ, I think), for $29.95.
