I don't see any update to this thread.  What happened?  Were you able to fix 
your problem?  Don't give up my Beige G3 gave me some problems with SCSI 
devices too when there was no apparent reason for it to do so.  Maybe the 
ribbon is broken or something.  Are you able to use the drive with another 
Mac?  A harddrive can crash but should be fixable by just reformatting, 
consider doing so and intalling OS in another Mac.

Also don't forget clock battery, ram checking, PCI card chekup, resetting 
PRAM, etc.
