Removing it from the LaCie case may void the LaCie warrantee*, but it's 
just an OEM ATA drive inside. It can be installed in place of the 
existing, built-in CD-ROM (etc) unit. Pioneer is "considering" a 
version of the flash utility that will work over FireWire, but 
considering how long it took them to get the Mac OS version in the 
first place, I probably won't wait.

*I put a generic 104 into my own FireWire case, so I have no warrantee 
concerns. I do have one at work that we bought packaged in a 
FireWire/USB 2.0 case. It has 'warrantee void if opened' stickers, so 
I'm also going to investigate the PC flash utility to see if it works 
across FireWire. If so, I'll just take mine to work and flash it there.
