I have to admit it - I'm stumped. I'm not about to to run X on my main G3 Beige 266 until I'm convinced browsing can be performed in reasonable fashion. My other apps can muddle through, even under Classic, which runs them OK. iTunes 3, which needs X, really rocks. So browsing is really the "gating factor" here for me.
The first problem is that Nav 4.78 takes a performance hit even when Classic is 9.1. All that Unix overhead I guess. Bummer. (Don't get me wrong - I have two Beiges and a Lombard so I'm not a MS troll or whatever the expression is. I'm testing Mozilla as it seems the most regarded, well rounded. Chas. Moore confirms that it's really the engine under NS 6's hood. And true, this X-browser readily displays the images (my benchmark is simply subaru.com - not asking much but that site challenges Nav 4.78 in 9.1). But it's slow. OK - but you can't even drag bookmarks beyond the folder edge (to make the folder scroll like we're used to in 9) so I can't manage bookmarks for diddley. I wish I could be sure that just doubling chip speed would make the difference - or will the limitations of today's X-browsers finally spoil the fun? And I'm averse to IE for some reason, and 9 is crisp. Guess I need therapy (I'd love a dose of positive reality). Thanks for listenin'.
