I've been lurking to this list for a little while, don't understand about 2/3 of what most of you are talking about but I'm hoping that someone can help me.
I have a blue & white G3 with a G3 300mhz cpu, 100mhz bus speed, 1 gig of ram, a 6 gig hd and a 40 gig hd. I have no idea what Rev is it (can't see where it will tell me that). I'm running OS 10.2, have 9.2 installed but almost never use it. I wanted to speed it up so I purchased a sonnet ZIF G4 500 mhz / 1M backside. After installing I ended up with all sorts of problems, the system would crash, freeze up, kernel panics (as many as one an hour), I'd lose my mouse, my keyboard, programs would just shut down.... Yuck!!! When I put the G3 back in it everything works (except it's much slower). I did install the firmware update prior to installing the chip that is required. Sonnet isn't much help - just sends me back to who I bought it from since it has been less than 30 days. I got it from Page Computing. I still want to upgrade to a G4 / 500 so my question is do I just ask them to replace this card or is this a known problem and would I be better off with a different brand? Also, once I get it running right I want to put an internal Cd-RW in it (it has a DVD /CD ROM in it right now. I'd eventually like to put a DVD burner in it but I want to wait until they get a little more stabilized (and cheaper). Ideas on a good <cheap> CD-RW for this machine? Thanks in advance!
