Just when I really didn't need it.

It's a 30 gb Maxtor Diamond, 14 months old. Monday night it said tick-tock
6 or 7 times and I couldn't activate anything. The tick tock stopped and
the Mac continued what it was doing (NS 7 loading a java applet on some
website).

Then I heard nothing of tick-tock until today. Just 1 time tick-tock, and I
immediatly started a panick-back up attack. Tick-tock again, s***! It's
done that about 5 times today.

I've heard that sound and seen that behaviour before, from several dying,
old scsi drives, so I assume it's the hd.

There's a 3 year warranty, so I've got another drive from the store where I
bought it, and moved everything over.

I have a couple of questions now:

1. I've had other weird stuff going around for some time, like my cd burner
just stopping in the middle of a burning for no apparent reason, and NS 7
stopping to respond to keyboard commands, and more which escapes me. But
I'm wondering if there's even a remote chance it could be something else?
That IDE controller chip or something? Cables and stuff inside seem to be
okay otherwise.

2. My first attempt to format the new hd turned out really weird, with a
warning message (sorta DOS'sy looking) came up and said something like
"initializationwarning**2", and there was no close box, no ok button, no
nothing, - had to force-quit Disktools. I just launched it again,
partitioned and formatted without a glitch.
Should I worry about that? Don't really trust it much yet.

TIA
Tina
