I had a strange tick tock on my iBook from the HD, started after I installed some new software. It sounded as though the head was constantly searching, though there was no reason for any disk activity. After trying all sorts of tips, including lengthy optimisation, that didn't work, the problem was solved by resetting the power button. This cured the problem instantly. I don't know what the equivalent on a B&W G3 is (seem to remember from my beige G3 that there's a swith on the motherboard) but someone on the list will know.
