-----------------
First, it sounds like you need to use drive setup and
completely wipe the existing hard drive. With a new (to you)
computer, this is always the best policy anyway. Wipes off any
problems left there by others.
Second, make yourself one scratch disk. I don't know of any
advantage to more than one. Photoshop puts an invisible file on the
scratch disk and uses it as a cache. Because so much data goes in
and out of the scratch disk and the resulting possibility of
corruption, it is best to use the scratch disk only for Photoshop.
Make the size in proportion to the size and complexities of
Photoshop files you work with. I make my scratch disks three to five
GB in size but I have 1.5 GB RAM in my accelerated 9600's and work
with multiple copies, multiple layers and large files.
After you install Photoshop don't forget to go into the
preferences and set the scratch disk location. By default it uses
your startup disk and that is not where you want it.
