I have a friend who recently bought a HP 3500c scanner, who can't get it
to work on her B&W G3 (OS 9.1). I helped reinstall the software again, but
the manager software just opens a miniature window (without all the
gadgets).

The scanning software works - it scans, you can save the scan, etc. -
but when you scan it does not open a widow to see it. It is supposed to open
a preview window to see the scan, crop it, etc. This makes it mostly
unusable.

I put this on my PowerBook G4, and the software worked both on OS X and
9.2.1 (though the manager was a little flakey in X). The window opened when
you told the software to scan.

I though maybe upgrading the G3 to 9.2.2 might help, but when I
downloaded and ran the software update, I got the splash screen and then no
other window. The install software was running (the menu worked, and the
system chimed on a mouse click to let me know was not clicking on a choice
in the dialog box) but the widow to continue never showed. (Again, it seemed
that the window was there, but not visible.)

I remember having had this same problem on an Bondi (Rev. B, 8.6) iMac -
no window on the OS installer (and when installing some kids games) but we
got used to it and just hit <return> to accept the default in the dialog box
for the games, (and haven't install OS software in years - I don't recall
how we did it before).

Maybe the installer on the kid's games and the OS is related. Until this
scanner software, I don't recall running into this anywhere else before.

Sorry for the long message, it is easier to show than explain. I hope it
was understandable.

Does anyone have any answers? Anyone run into the invisible window ever?
Anyone using HP scanner software successfully? (It was 5.1.1 fresh from HP,
who spent a couple of hours in two phone calls with my friend, and was
stumped). Thanks.
