My experience on my first edition iBook was when I upgraded to 9.1
which was required in order to upgrade to Appleworks 6, I found that it
was not backward compatible with several things such as the scanner
software that came with my 6 month old Epson. 9.0.4 seemed more stable
to me and there was very little difference in functionality. 9.0.4
was, I think, primarily a bug fix for 9.0. Versions after that were
changed primarily to work better as Classic in OS X.

A second thing to consider is that a lot of third party developers took
Jobs at his word that OS9 was dead and stopped developing for it before
9.1 came along. I would recommend you stop with 9.0.4 for your peace
of mind. :-)
