I can't believe the problems I'm having with this. After installing the
OWC G4 500 the first time I had nothing but lock-ups: the screen and
everything on it would just quietly stop. We thought it might be a bad
module and OWC was good enough to send another to me overnight which
arrived this afternoon. In the meantime, I had put the original G3/400
processor back to get some work done for a couple deadlines I had this
morning.

However, since installing the most recent G4/500 I have had 20 lock-ups
in the last 11 hours--no, wait--half-way through this message it did it
again--make that 21 in 11 hours, 15 minutes. Believe me, I've logged them
all in the hope I might find some sort of pattern. Nothing I can see yet.

It can happen in just about any program it seems: iTunes, Organizer,
PowerMail, Photoshop, Finder, and even before the Finder when I restarted
the normal way and it froze just after the desktop pictures came on and
before the menus drew.

Opening the case, I can feel that the heat sink is warm to the touch.
Certainly not hot.

I'm currently testing the RAM. I pulled out three of the four 256 MB
modules. I've just put #3 in the 0 slot after this last crash (#1 and #2
I'd put in the 3 slot and it hadn't made a difference in performance).

I have rebuilt the permissions with Disk Utility three times; there
always seems lots for it to do there (is that typical)?

These lock-ups take the form of the screen just quietly stopping--no
warning, no message, no activity at all. I have to use the front buttons
or the keyboard to force a restart.

I'm at a loss. I've only been in OS X for a few weeks and am nowhere near
the troubleshooting, semi-pseudo kinda guru I was in OS 9.

I'm looking for any kind of suggestions of where I might look next to
track this down.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.
