I couldn't agree more with that; I miss SCSIProbe sorely. But the fact
that these little helpers have not been rewritten for X does say a lot
about the future of SCSI on normal desktops as the manufacturers
themselves see it. The only thing SCSI has going for it is its
JohnDeere dependability, an issue to be sure in commercial servers, but
even the XServe has UltraATA. For externals, USB2, Firewire and the new
wireless protocols are all at least as fast if not faster (much
faster!) in pratical use, all are cheaper, and all are hot-swapable
with no hitches. Simple plug and play. Lots of us, especially on such
lists, are not afraid to open a case, know how to use a soldering iron,
can read a drawing etc. but I doubt we are characteristic of the
consumer market in that respect. In fact, I know we aren't from my
daily encounters with "normal" professional users (e.g. a graphic
designer nextdoor, a professional photographer down the street, a
translator/layouter nearby - I doubt that all the "chickens" are
concentrated on my little village).

Has to be of course. How long has UNIX been around?
