Yeah, that is a general problem, although I have never noticed it from 
the hard drive, always from the CD ROM. The way it ends up working is 
that all Power Macs using the 7500 case [the one the desktop G3 used] 
that have a CD ROM 20x or faster tend to make that sound due to 
vibration in the case. Generally the best fix seems to be to have a 
monitor on top of it and move it until it subdues the vibration.
