I've struck out now three times with ZIF upgrades and can't figure out why I
can't get them to work. As a result, I'm turning to you experts. First - my
hardware. I have a Beige 266 DT, 544 MB of RAM, the version B ROM, stock
internal CD drive and two internal hard drives (40 GB IDE on ATA 0 and 4 GB
IDE on ATA 1). I also have a USB PCI card (for a printer and digital
camera) and a firewire PCI card (for a CD-RW drive and digital camcorder
transfer to iMovie). I am running system 9.2.2. At 266MHz, the machine has
been very stable and unexplained crashes are rare.
The first time I tried to upgrade the ZIF was with OWC. They were clearing
out 350 MHz G3 ZIFs cheap, but I went through two of them that wouldn't work
stably and so both were returned. I followed all of the installation
instructions about the jumpers, etc. and didn't try to overclock the ZIF,
but to no avail - the computer crashed constantly and for no apparent
reason. I tried to engage OWC in a dialog (emailed Apple System Profiler
report, etc.) about what my problems might be but they didn't even try to
help. I just assumed that they were selling defective merchandise and I
waited for another deal to come along.
Recently I bought a 450 MHz G3 ZIF on eBay from a reputable seller who
professed to have tested each ZIF personally. Again I followed all
instructions and set the jumpers for 466 MHZ - 66 MHz bus (the closest I
could get to 450). I am still getting frequent strange crashes, like
freezing up if I open more than one program. Also, certain programs like
iMovie crash when they are the only programs open.
I have decided to send this ZIF back, but I cannot decide if I want another
one sent out. I would like the additional speed but quite frankly I am
feeling jinxed and am tired of wasting all kinds of time trying to get the
$%#% thing to work. Has anyone who had similar problems been able to work
around them? Is there anything I can do, or am I stuck with 266 MHz in
order to have stability?

Thanks in advance

John
